The Culbert Family
The family that was selected for the First Annual Regina Extreme Home Makeover is certainly a deserving family. Dawn Culbert, along with her two children Kelsey and Colton, were surprised on August 5th, by a loud mega phone, balloons and a large group of people stating that they are about to receive an extreme home makeover.
Dawn and her husband Dean lived in this house together, raising their now 13 year old son, Colton, and their 16 year old daughter, Kelsey, who was born with cerebral palsy. Over the years, Kelsey (who requires a wheelchair) and Dawn had to make several trips to Montreal every few months so Kelsey’s medical needs could be met. There have been many surgeries Kelsey has been through but she is still full of life! Meanwhile, when Colton was just three years old, Dean went into renal failure. After a transplant, Dean had complications which eventually lead Dean to rely on a wheelchair as well. When Dawn & Kelsey had to travel to Montreal for surgeries, Colton had to take over the house and care for his father. Colton had to help him with everyday tasks which made Colton that much closer to his father. To this day, the Culbert family has never been on a family vacation which we plan to change.
Although the house was not properly wheelchair accessible for Kelsey or Dean, they made it work and remained a close family. They had to use a track system to access their bedrooms and bathroom and Dean and Kelsey could never see their basement.
On May 26th of this year, Dean passed away, leaving Dawn to raise their two children alone. Even with the very recent passing of Dean, there is so much love and energy from this family. They deserve to live better and with their new home it will provide the Culbert family a new beginning.
Regina Extreme Home Makeover edition will consist of 4 stages as outlined below:
Stage 1: Planning and Organizing
Time Frame: Now - May 31, 2009During this stage we will be asking for commitments from the local companies invited to participate in this worthwhile event. The website links and all request forms will be built and finalized to allow for local residents to apply to the Regina Extreme Home Makeover. Media relationships and commitments will be built in this stage.
Stage 2: Accepting Applications
Time Frame: June 1, 2009 - July 31st, 2009This will be the most critical and important stage of the entire event. We need to ensure every family has the chance to apply. In order to get the word out, we need the help of every source of media willing to donate advertising. During this stage, applications will be collected and held till July 31st, 2009. A committee will be formed made up of representatives from the sponsoring companies. All applications will be divided up equally and forward to each representative of the committee on July 31st, 2009 at midnight. Each representative will be allowed to choose their top two choices. This is done to decrease the amount of work and time it would take for every committee member to read every application. On August 2nd, 2009 at 5pm at a location TBA, we will invite all the representatives to reveal their top two choices to the entire committee. During that night, the top three candidates will be chosen. On August 3rd, 2009, all three of the final contestants will be visited and an interview with an initial inspection of the home will take place. Also a criminal record check will be required. On August 4th, 2009 at 5pm at a location TBA, the greatest family in need in Regina will be chosen! The family will be notified this night and all other families will be called or emailed to inform them of the decision.
Stage 3: Completion of Work
Time Frame: Aug 4th, 2009 - Sept 15th, 2009Stage 3 is where all the contractors and real work come into play. The entire project will be planned and executed. All trades and businesses are expected to have the home completed by Sept 15th. Regina’s family most in need of our support will move in on Sept 15th with the grand revealing.
Stage 4: Grand Revealing
Time Frame: Sept 15th, 2009 at 5:00pmThe moment everyone has been working towards, the family move-in! We will be hosting a media event at the chosen family’s home to showcase the finished product and have a final thank you to all the sponsors and supporters that helped to make the event such a success.
